Get up close and personal with the North Atlantic Puffin on this bird watching tour of the Westfjords. This adventure is a must for anyone travelling through this desolate part of Iceland and should not be missed by any lovers of wildlife or nature.

The tour departs from the charming town of Patreksfjörður, where you will meet your friendly local guide who will take you to the best spots to feast your eyes and point your camera. You will travel in a large jeep that is well suited to the gravel and dirt roads of the Westfjords.

In the Westfjords of Iceland, the bird watching season begins in April. There is nothing like exploring these beautiful fjords in the summer when the area comes to life with lush green landscapes, and fair-feathered visitors come to nest, breed and play.

During the height of the Icelandic summer, the phenomenon that is the midnight sun guarantees near unlimited daylight hours, when the sun doesn’t set and the nights are coloured with red and gold. This means, that within different stages of the season, there is always plenty of time to enjoy the sceneries at hand and take wonderful photos that will last you a lifetime.

On your excursion, you will be visiting the bird cliff Látrabjarg, the largest seabird colony in the whole of the North Atlantic Ocean. What’s more, puffins haven’t been hunted at this location for decades, which results in the little fellows being especially relaxed towards human visitors.

Besides from puffins, the species of bird to be found at Látrabjarg include razorbills, fulmars, kittiwakes, shags, cormorants and guillemots, just to name a few. Sometimes you can even spot Great Northern Divers or the White Tailed Eagle. Rest assured that any avid bird watchers out there will cross off more than a few new sightings in their books.
