Travel one of the most beautiful routes in the country, the Svalvogar Circle route, and see mountain ranges, fjords and valleys on an amazing day tour. Those wanting an in-depth experience to the Westfjords should not let this opportunity pass them by.
The Svalvogar Circle is one of the country’s best-kept secrets. This 49-kilometre country road starts at the magnificent Dýrafjörður fjord and stretches along mountains and headlands before ending in a circle back at the fjord.
The rocky terrain of the road makes it inaccessible for vehicles other than specially designed super jeeps, which are built to handle Iceland’s rugged landscapes. On this tour, you’ll board one of those super jeeps and travel this narrow and exposed coastal route, enjoying spectacular scenery along the way.
Departing from Ísafjörður, you will make your way to Dýrafjörður fjord and onto the Kjaransvegur road. This track was carved into the mountain by one man and his son, only using a small bulldozer. It is a remarkable feat of engineering, iron, and pure willpower.
The road snakes along the edges of a high cliff and goes through deep valleys and pebble beaches. On this winding track, you’ll see the desolate fate of a former settlement in the abandoned farmhouses that are dotted around the area.
Looming over you is a scenic mountain range often referred to as ‘The Westfjord Alps’. At the mountain pass Kvennaskarð, you will start a moderate hike, ascending 570 metres to the summit of the Westfjord’s tallest mountain, Kaldbakur.
At the top, you’ll get incredible views over the Westfjords, its verdant valleys and picturesque mountains. You’ll then hike back to the super jeep, and travel once more through the narrow road until you reach Ísafjörður again.
