Head to Westeros and the lands North of the Wall, with this tour of Game of Thrones locations around Iceland. This trip should not be missed by any who are enraptured by HBO’s most beloved show.

Be warned that the description of this tour will contain spoilers.

Game of Thrones has become the most culturally significant show of a generation, and though it uses many countries for its shooting locations and has a very liberal budget for editing, some of its greatest scenes are shot in Iceland.

Your tour begins when you are picked up from Reykjavík. Your first destination for the day will be Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage and integral part of the famous Golden Circle Route. While its history, as one of the world’s bastions of parliamentary democracy, and its geology, being located right in the mid-Atlantic rift, are fascinating, it is the scenes shot here that are of most interest to you.

From a viewing platform on the North American tectonic plate, you can look over the lake Þingvallavatn; if you imagine it with the furthest mountains edited away so that it looks like it opens to the sea, you will note that this is where Arya Stark used her coin to leave Westeros for Braavos.

The Almmanagjá Gorge is a narrow canyon, walled on one side by the North American plate and the other from where the plate used to be, before breaking off. Here, the Gates of the Moon are filmed, which lead into the Eyrie. Sansa, Arya, Catelyn, Brienne and the Hound have all had scenes here. The iconic fight scene between the latter two occurred on hills nearby.

As you drive to your next location, you will notice that some of the mountains and scenery are familiar, even if you can’t quite place them. This is due to the skilled editors at HBO; features from across the world are shot on location, then spliced together to create a completely new setting.

The Settlement Era Viking Lodge at Þjórsárdalur is your next stop. Here, you will see traditional turf roof houses and farms, surrounded by a verdant, countryside setting. While idyllic and peaceful in reality, it was used as the setting of one of Season Four’s most brutal massacres, when Wildlings including Tormund Giantsbane and Ygritte attack a village en route to Castle Black.

While in the valley of Þjórsárdalur, you will admire the waterfalls Hjálparfoss and Þórufoss. In clear weather, you will be able to see Mýrdalsjökull from here, which is used as the setting for the Fist of the First Men, the ruin of a once great stronghold located North of the Wall.

After seeing many of the Game of Thrones shooting locations, you will return to Reykjavík, buzzing from the fact you have walked in the footsteps of some of the great heroes and villains of Westeros.
