Take flight over the lunar landscapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula with this breathtaking helicopter excursion. If you want to see Iceland’s nature at its most stark and beautiful, but don’t want to miss a second of adventure, then this is the tour for you.
This excursion begins when you meet your pilot at the departure point by Reykjavík Domestic Airport. They will give you a briefing on your route, before taking you to your sleek helicopter where you’ll hop on, buckle up, and take off.
Reykjavík is beautiful from street-level, but to see it from above, with its brightly coloured tin roofs, feats of modern architecture and incredible surrounding nature is a unique privilege few get to experience.
After capturing sights of Hallgrímskirkja church, Harpa Concert Hall, Faxaflói Bay and Mount Esja, the chopper will turn to the West, and you will begin your exploration of the Reykjanes Peninsula.
The raw volcanism of this barren, otherworldly region can only be truly appreciated from above. Countless craters will pass beneath you, interrupting the desolate landscape of endless lava fields; occasionally, you will see steam rising from some seething geothermal areas; and you’ll soar over the craggy, dramatic coastline, weathered by the constant beating of the Atlantic Ocean.
The Reykjanes Peninsula is home to many of Iceland’s natural wonders. You will catch sight of the lakes Kleifarvatn, wide and serene, and Grænavatn, small and azure, and the large and mystic mud-pit of Gunnuhver. You will even fly above the world famous Blue Lagoon.
Your journey will conclude with a smooth landing on one of the volcanic peaks or lunar lava fields, where you will attain incredible views of your surroundings, and be allowed plenty of time for photos.
After an hour or so, you will turn back to Reykjavík, and soar through the air to the Domestic Airport. You will disembark with a camera full of photographs, mind full of memories, and your veins still pumping with adrenaline.
