Tick two boxes off your bucket list with this incredible winter tour; see the insides of a glacier, and witness the Northern Lights. This trip should appeal to anyone seeking to experience some of nature’s greatest marvels.
This tour begins when you are picked up from your accommodation in downtown Reykjavík. You will then start to head to the Langjökull ice cap but will make several fascinating stops along the way.
First will be the Hraunfossar waterfalls, which sit within an area steeped in troll folklore. Following this, you will head to the highest-flowing hot spring in Europe, Deildartunguhver. You will then see the historical village of Reykholt and the settlement of Húsafell before you continue onto the glacier.
When at the foot of Langjökull glacier, you will transfer into a super-jeep, perfectly designed for ascending the icy slopes. The journey up is spectacular; the higher you climb, the further you can see across the incredible Icelandic nature.
Once you reach the ice tunnels, you will be struck by their beauty. Iceland is the only place in the world where the public can enter man-made channels carved into a glacier all the way throughout the year, so the experience truly is once-in-a-lifetime.
Your guide will lead you through the vivid blue tunnels, discussing with you as you go the history and future of Iceland’s glaciers.
After an hour’s exploration, you will exit, be driven off the glacier, and enter your old minibus for your Northern Lights hunt. Your guide is an expert at finding them and will be following the weather online, as well as their own knowledge of the best lookout spots, to give you the best chance you have at seeing them.
As the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, there is no guarantee that they will show even under optimal conditions. If you are not lucky enough to catch them, however, you will get to do this part of the tour another night without charge.
After you have hopefully marveled over the Aurora Borealis dancing amongst a canopy of stars, you will be returned to your accommodation in Reykjavík.
