Enjoy a bike ride through the beautiful features of the Westfjords with this excellent day tour. This should not be missed by those who’d like to keep active while seeing Iceland’s most spectacular sites.
You’ll start the day when you are picked up from Patreksfjörður, a local town, and whisked to Látrabjarg, a 14 kilometre stretch of cliffs up to 440 metres high, renowned for their birdlife.
Upon arrival, you’ll get out of your vehicle and switch to a bike; after a quick briefing, you will set out to explore the cliffs. You will not need to look hard to seek out the birdlife; there are literally millions, nestled in the rocks or circling overhead. While there are a dozen different species, the Atlantic Puffin is the species most sought out and can be found here in abundance.
As birds have not been hunted here for generations, the animals are unafraid of people and will let you get rather close without showing discomfort. Even so, ensure you stay a good distance from the edge, for your safety and that of the birds.
After enjoying your bike ride, marvelling over the puffins, and taking some pictures that many wildlife photographers would be jealous of, you’ll cycle to the Hnjótur Heritage Museum.
Here, you can learn all about the history of the Westfjords. Of particular interest is the story of a shipwreck at Látrabjarg; the stranded sailors would have died at the bottom of the cliffs if Icelandic farmers did not band together to descend on ropes to save them.
After this, you will cycle to your final destination of the day, Rauðasandur. This beach is home to tropical-looking golden sands, and stretches for miles; cycling along it, with the gleaming ocean on one side and bird-cliffs on the other, is a joyous experience.
Once you have enjoyed this area, you’ll be driven back to Patreksfjörður.
