Mount up and join this powerful ATV tour of Þórsmörk valley, ringed with mountains, glaciers and luscious hillsides. This tour is for anyone who wishes to celebrate a green oasis in the midst of Iceland’s many volcanic features or anyone hoping for a little more action on their vacation.

The valley is inaccessible for much of the year due to harsh weather and glacial meltwater which makes the rivers swell to unpassable depths, so it is always a sign of happier times when the mountain roads are opened to allow visitors to this area again.

This is one stop on the famous Laugavegur hiking trail which stretches across the Icelandic highlands, so there is plenty to do and see here. Camping is another popular activity, and so there are some huts along the way where you can rest and meet fellow travellers.

You’ll cross many rushing rivers on this tour, including the powerful Krossá and Markarfljót. These rivers feed the rich plant life here, including moss, fern, birch trees and other shrubs and wildflowers.

Mountains dominate the horizon, including the harsh peak of Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers, their tops usually shrouded in mist. In fact, these glaciers provide a much-needed windbreak for the valley, causing it to be even warmer than other locations on the South Coast.

The area was covered with a thick layer of ash in 2010 following the eruption at Eyjafjallajökull, smothering the landscape and destroying great swathes of plant life. After several months of recovery, it is now so pristine that it’s hard to believe that this region was ever touched by such chaos.
