Enjoy the awesome cityscapes of Reykjavík while filling up on traditional Icelandic food with this walking and eating tour of the capital city. This is a perfect opportunity to book if you want a fun and interactive introduction to this quirky nation.

You will meet your guides downtown at the beginning of this tour, and with a small group, set off to explore Reykjavík. This town, with a thousand years of history and a thriving culture, is a marvellous place to explore.

You will, for example, see Hallgrímskirkja church, the largest monument in the city, and the modern concert hall, Harpa. The parliament, called the Alþingi, is also on the agenda, an institution that has existed in some form since 930 AD, and the Höfði House will be visited too, a place where negotiations to end the Cold War began.

As you travel through the city streets, you will note a wealth of street-art, both commissioned and uncommissioned as graffiti has a long tradition in Iceland.

You will also, if the weather is clear, have some beautiful natural views. Across Faxaflói Bay, you can often see the flat-topped mountain Esja, the volcanoes of the Reykjanes Peninsula, and even the distant, snowy Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

As for the food you will be trying, expect some delicious treats as well as some revolting morsels. Icelanders have a fascinating food culture, based on dairy products, lamb, fish, root vegetables and native herbs. Some are sweet and lovely, like the yoghurt Skyr, while some seem entirely unfit for human consumption, like the reeking fermented shark ‘hákarl’.

Of course, at many of these venues, you will also be able to try some Icelandic craft beers (the home brewery industry is booming) and traditional schnapps, Brennivín.

After enjoying many little courses of Icelandic food and seeing the classic sites of Reykjavík, the tour will come to a close, although you are more than welcome to check out more bars and destinations downtown, which your guide will have recommended to you.
