Descend into the earth on a tour of the lava cave of Lofthellir and the peculiar world of darkness there, in the icy underground. The destination for this trip is a unique cave boasting some of the greatest natural ice sculptures known to exist in Iceland.

You’ll be picked up from your accommodation for a short flight from Reykjavík Domestic Airport to Akureyri, Iceland's second largest town, also called “The capital of the North.”

Akureyri is a beautiful city you may want to get to know on its own: there are many activities and opportunities to be found in the surrounding countryside, which is surprisingly lush in the summertime. Other activities such as horseback riding and whale watching are available, or you can choose something relaxing, such as a walk around the beautiful botanical gardens there.

There, you will meet your local guide and be driven to Lake Mývatn from where you go on to the unique Hverfell volcano, through the Lúdentarborgir crater row to the foot of Mt. Hvannfell.

Before you reach Cave Lofthellir, you take an easy walk across lava fields for 20 minutes, surrounded by otherworldly scenery. You spend at least an hour inside this cave to observe the spectacular natural phenomena. Before returning back to Akureyri you will make a stop at the Reykjahlíð village located by Lake Mývatn.

Reykjahlíð is famous for its church, which escaped the eruption of the volcano Katla in 1729. While the rest of the town was destroyed by the flowing lava, the priest prayed that the church would be saved. It was, though the church was later rebuilt in 1972. As a result of its history, many sulphur springs and steaming lava fields can be viewed in the area.
